Frequently Asked Questions

What is Animation Buffet?

- Well, have you ever spent countless of hours trying to find free animation rigs? Would you prefer to spend that time animating? I know I do.
There are many artists who offer their rigs for free online, or sites which list rigs that are currently available, but it's all spread out across the web and time consuming to find and to go through. You need a hub which combines all those lists. That's what I would like Animation Buffet to be.

I also want to do a quick review of the rigs, so I can point out the pros and cons to any possible student (or professional animator) who might want to use them.

Are all these rigs free?

- Yes. At least that's the main goal. If you get free rigs that come with a CD/DVD purchase (for instance bundled with a book), I'll list them as well, even though they are technically not free. ;)

What software is needed for those rigs?

- Mainly Maya for now.

Ah, hahaha, sorry. Your way of writing in English confused me then. :)

And I don't know Studio Max, so you'd have to ask someone else, sorry.

Sorry, I'm an animator not a rigger. You will have to request that on a rigging forum.

I guess they can't be used commercially?

You'd have to ask the owner regarding commercial work. When in doubt don't use any of these rigs commercially. Ask first, and if there's no answer, find another rig.

Great website!
Can I use this rigs in an animation demo reel? And can I use the 3D meshes for rigging from scratch and use them in a demo reel too? Thanks!

Jean-Denis Haas said...

That's not my call, you'd have to ask the person(s) who rigged the characters for any type of permissions.

Hi this web site is really amazing. I wanted to ask you something, if I want to participate in a contest animating one of the characters you have here, can I do it? of course I'll specify that the modelling, rigging and /or texturing is not mine. :) thanks!

Jean-Denis Haas said...

That is up to the person who rigged the character you're using. So far, any non commercial work has been okay but again, that's not my call.
